The 24-week human clinical study was published in Skin Research & Technology, the official journal of the International Society for Bioengineering of the Skin (ISBS). Finasteride is considered more effective for reducing hair loss. It works by competing with testosterone, preventing it from binding to the enzyme 5-alpha reductase. This reduces the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a molecule believed to contribute to inflammation and hair loss.

In other words, finasteride reduces DHT, which can lead to less hair loss. However, disrupting the natural testosterone-to-DHT conversion may result in side effects, such as lower libido and erectile dysfunction. DHT also plays a crucial role in the development of male fetuses, so altering this hormonal balance can lead to unintended consequences.
